Embody Safety Project

Posted: September, 2010

"Embody Safety" is a project that will lift maritime academies' safety culture to level with the best performing in the shipping industry. The project was initiated in 2009 with a visit to the project partners and it is now entering a phase where the partners start to gain valuable input.

In partnership with SIMAC (Svendborg International Maritime Academy) and 3 other renowned maritime academies AMET in India, PMMA in India and SMU in China, Green-Jakobsen is currently developing the toolboxes that will enable faculty and management at the maritime academies to imbed an industry leading safety culture building on the leading risk management principles in the maritime industry.

The academies will be assisted in everything from formulating policies, creating reporting systems, managing a change process - to imbed the principles of process oriented teaching and risk management into their daily training activities.

The idea behind the project is that safety should be imbedded into every activity at the academy, so it will be as natural as breathing. In this way the safety culture will mirror the safety culture that the student meets when they embark as officers. This leads to the vision of zero accidents on board - and on shore.

The academies have just participated in a workshop in Denmark, formulating the way ahead for the project, which will be finalized end November.

The project is sponsored by the Danish Maritime Trust, and will be made available to all maritime academies who want to work actively and seriously with their own safety culture - for free!"
