Safety Survey Reports Out
Posted: September, 2010
In February
Green-Jakobsen launched a Safety Culture Survey - a proposition to
our clients and business partners to analyze the safety culture and
performance of their company and benchmark the results against
other shipping companies. In July we sent the reports to the three
companies participating in this first survey. Subsequently they
have had the opportunity to study it and consider their further
reactions.
The report gives the
companies a good foundation for the development of the company
safety culture and shows the issues that need handling now, and the
threats to conquer along the way. On the other side it also shows
where to find the learning points and what opportunities to seize
and build upon.
The survey covered the seafarers' perception on safety as
manifested in the following dimensions: proactiveness, involvement,
assertiveness, visibility and knowledge actions. Three areas
were specifically pointed to measure the level of safety culture
maturity. They were on 1) staff, superintendents and
management ashore, 2) the shipboard management, and 3) the
perception on personal safety behaviour. Results were
compared with attained average of all participating companies to
get an overview of how the Company fared well in comparison to
other players in the industry.
The participating
companies have been very satisfied with the results, as this new
tool enables them to be at the leading edge when it comes to
building a strong safety culture. The surveys will be used actively
in the companies for laying down future safety action plans - and
also towards customers, typically oil companies, showing an active
attitude towards safety. And the companies are eager to participate
in the survey next year to see the effects of their safety culture
initiatives reflected in the survey.
Green-Jakobsen
will launch another survey campaign in the autumn 2010.
