Ship-shore communication

The value we provide

Communication between shore base and ship is mostly carried by e-mail and oral communication. From time to time the tone and wording in this communication does not support the purpose, and the consequence is that focus is lost and a cause for misunderstandings and conflicts is laid.

In a busy business environment small issues can escalate to conflicts and further have a negative impact on the general motivation on board if communication is improperly dealt with. Therefore the value of good communication is to ensure that all messages are clear and heard and to contribute to making working conditions acceptable for all staff.

What we do

There are many causes for a possible communication "break-down". Green-Jakobsen's profound knowledge of the working conditions for both the seafarers and the staff ashore makes us capable of providing initiatives to establish a common understanding of the possible benefits of good communication and the consequence of poor communication. To reach agreement on a communication best practise in your company can be one of the end results of our consultancy and may cover the objectives to:

  • to establish a common understanding
of what is the best way of communicating
    using email and other standard
    communication means
  • to raise the general awareness about
    the possible consequences of poor
    communication
  • to establish a "manifesto" which entails
the communication values and best practises

The way we do it

One effective way of working with the matter of communication is through a workshop process including the introduction of communication tools and methods. We do that because:

  • Employees often have a very limited
    communication tool box and are
left to their 'own imagination' and
    attempts during communication processes
  • Employees need to recognise and
    accept that they are responsible
    for the communication and that
    problems occur due to poor
    communication
  • Employees need to be involved
in identifying the causes for poor
    communication and defining the
    characteristics of good communica-
tion and further commit to adhering
    to this practise
