The value we
provide
Looking at the history
of merchant shipping, significant improvements in safety have been
achieved through improved vessels, materials and general design, as
well as the application of enhanced Safety Management Systems.
However, due to a general LTA plateau (Lost Time Accidents),
different approaches are now required to stimulate further
progress.
It is widely recognised
that this 'different' approach to safety will be focused on the
culture of the organisation or the behaviour of the people
responsible for managing safety.
A good safety
culture will enhance company reputation, whereas a single
major incident can ruin it. Indeed, a major incident can mar the
reputation of the industry as a whole, and cause harm to many of
the interdependent organisations that contribute to and rely on the
success of the industry
What we do
Safety Culture is
reflected in the behaviour and actions of people.
In order to help companies develop their safety development
strategies the process could begin with a safety culture
survey in order to map the safety behaviour according to
the dimensions: proactiveness, involvement, assertiveness,
visibility and knowledge actions. The areas are
specifically pointed to measure the level of safety culture
maturity. To address some of the weaknesses of the current safety
culture safety culture workshop is one of the means to follow up on
a survey or to identify actions to improve the culture in critical
areas.
Another outcome of a
strategy process may be to assist the management
and provide employees and managers with a
toolbox and guidelines for the implementation and
embedment of an improved safety culture.
