“It is especially important that leaders of the organisation share a common perception of how our organisation learns and develops. They must in other words help live the principles stipulated in the learning and development philosophy.”
Tommy Olofsen, Vice President, Corporate Marine HR, Torm A/S
“We have received very good feedback – some have even said that it has been the most useful training they have taken so far. Now they have more tools available to handle different challenging situations on board, which have made their jobs easier and less stressful”.
Linda Frederich, HR Manager Rederiet Stenersen AS
What is the value of leadership
“Without leaders you can’t run an effective business. Leadership is about setting goals, direction and achieving these goals through others. Effective leaders create effective people leading successful companies”.
Good leaders drive performance further. They are an enabling force, helping people and organisations to perform at the highest level. Besides, they are the decisive factor in the creation of an environment of coaching, support, delegation, motivation, and empowerment and thus a decisive factor to achieve high retention.
In order to be able to fulfil this performance driving role, the company values and goals must be embodied in the leader who must possess the knowledge, ability and tools to act as a competent leader. The leaders must therefore be trained in competencies that go beyond compliance and include soft skills that enable them to handle the high demands on them. The interaction between the leader and the employee ashore and on board is a focal point where the leader can achieve considerable success and ensure the backing of his or her employees.
“Leaders can only lead – get people to follow – if they have clear goals specific enough for their part of the organisation”.
The way we do it
“Train and develop social and personal competencies”
A leadership development programme is tailor-made to the client’s needs and wishes and will serve as a means to drive value and strategy driven processes in the company. Firstly, development goals are defined and described in cooperation with the top management and according to company vision. We ensure that the leadership competencies are integrated in the job descriptions and the competency management system. On the basis of our observations and assessments we design and prepare a training plan with modules specifically for the top management and middle management ashore and the officers on board. On top of that we make a communication strategy to make sure that the target groups are well informed and will buy-in on the agreed activities. The result is that all leaders have the required tools and skills to handle their leadership roles more effectively and with greater confidence on board and on shore to the benefit of all other employees.
“The manager directly shapes the employees’ perception of the organisation and their jobs. This means he can affect both the employees’ willingness to go above and beyond as well as their intent to stay in the organisation”
