Managing a multi-cultural crew with different characteristics, behaviour, working habits, and personal goals is not always easy. The leader must have flexible leadership styles and various ways of interacting with crew members to establish an effective cooperation. Without common purpose, performance goals, and systematised approach where everyone holds crew members equally responsible, manning and operating the ship will become a larger challenge. Cooperation is achieved through the understanding and acceptance of crew cultural traits that can either stimulate or works against an effective work. Leaders need to understand how they for example in a multicultural environment can build and create effective teams, improve interpersonal relations, or use correct ways to solve conflicts. These approaches deal with the proper use of communication, which is the fundamental building block of establishing cooperation.
